Clinical Decision Making at End of Life in Older Person Care

  • Description:

Participants will explore the importance of ethical considerations for clinical decision-making, in achieving quality end of life care for the older person.

  • Course objectives:

At the end of the day, participants can expect to:

    • Understand the principles and concepts of palliative care as a framework for delivering care to the older person in the last phase of life.
    • Gain theoretical knowledge of the ethical values and principles which inform end of life decision making.
    • Explore clinical decision-making with regard to end of life care planning for older person in relation to Place of care.
    • Artificial nutrition and hydration.
    • Resuscitation.
    • Medication use.
    • Discontinuing interventions.
    • Recognise the importance of sensitively initiating and implementing advanced care planning.

For Nurses who want to update their knowledge and nurses new to care of the older person.

  • Course Objectives:

Nurses across all health care sectors face the challenge of embracing new methods of care delivery aimed at providing evidence based, quality, person-centred services.

The aim of this course is to provide participants with an opportunity to reflect on issues pertinent to their clinical practice in care of the older person settings and empower them to deliver evidence based, person centred care.

    • Nurse Care Planning and Documentation.
    • Issues Around Swallowing and Older People.
    • The Ageing of Eye and Ear.
    • Activity Provision in Dementia Care.
    • Protecting Older People (Elder Abuse Prevention).

Essential Palliative Care - The European Certificate

This eight-week distance learning/home study programme is aimed at doctors and nurses working in clinical practice or who are new to specialist palliative care. 

  • Description:

8 week distance learning course for all doctors and nurses.

The course is divided into five sections, each covering different principles and practice for delivering end-of-live care in all settings:

  • Caring for patients with pain.
  • Palliative care and the gastrointestinal system.
  • Breaking bad news and ethcal issues.
  • Emergencies in palliative care and palliative care in non-malignant disease.
  • The last 48 hours of life: practical issues and bereavement.

Managing Pain Using a Palliative Care Approach for Registered Nurses (incorporating syringe driver workshop)

  • Course Objectives:

At the end of the day, participants will:

  • Diagnose a person’s pain more confidently, through understanding the concepts, meaning and classification of pain.
  • Appreciate the importance of holistic, detailed and accurate pain assessment.
  • Be mindful of the psychological, social and spiritual factors that impacts on the person’s experience of pain.
  • Refer to standard analgesic guidelines to direct safe and effective pharmacological interventions.
  • Gain theoretical knowledge of the safe and appropriate use a syringe driver.
  • Confidently set up and monitor syringe drivers to enhance  your scope of practice.
  • Candidates may register to attend the full day or syringe driver workshop only.
