Overview
The Department of Health and Children, Ireland, Nursing Policy Division is charged with providing professional advice on nursing, midwifery and related issues to the Minister for Health and Children and the Department generally. This professional component also delivers leadership to nurses and midwives.
The Nursing Policy Division is situated within the area of National Human Resources and Workforce Planning of the Department of Health And Children. It is one of five divisions within National Human Resources and Workforce Planning headed up by Mr. Bernard Carey, Assistant Secretary General.
Remit and Responsibilities
- Education and professional development.
- Development of Legislation and regulation in relation to nursing and midwifery e.g. Review of Nurses Act 1985.
- Workforce planning for nursing and midwifery grades including skill mix.
- An Bord Altranais and National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery.
- Pay and Conditions of nursing and midwifery grades.
- Supporting the Minister.

Newsletter
In May 2007 the Department of Health and Children's Nursing Policy Division launched a Newsletter from the Professional Advisors within the Nursing Policy Division.
The aim of this newsletter is to update nurses/midwives working in Ireland and keep them informed of current nursing and midwifery related policy issues. It aims to provide information on the activities relative to the advisory function of the Chief Nursing Officer and Nurse and Midwife Advisors. It also aims to provide a two-way communication pathway so that feedback is encouraged from nurses/midwives working in Ireland that will serve to support the division in the provision of timely, high quality advice in order to influence policy developement.
